V.I. WINDSURFER 4TH IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Oct. 8, 2003 – Virgin Islands native son Devon Boulon placed fourth out of 93 competitors at the professional men's 2003 Formula Windsurfing Class World Championships held last week in Rugen, Germany.
The 21-year-old son of Rafe and Kimberly Boulon of St. John also won the Espoir title for male windsurfers ages 19 to 22.
In an e-mail message to the Source, Boulon said he was the top U.S. racer in the competition "and the only three guys to beat me were three of the five big names in the racing scene."
Steve Allen of Australia finished first, followed by Antoine Albeau of France and Wojtek Brzozowski of Poland.
Boulon explained that the other two racers on his list of "the five big names" are fellow Americans — Kevin Pritchard, Formula Windsurfing world champion for the last two years; and Micah Buzianis, this year's Professional Windsurfers Association racing world champion "and the last couple of years my teacher and training partner." Pritchard finished in 17th place last week, and Buzianis came in 7th.
His own No. 4 finish "was a great way to end the year and excellent motivation to get ready for next year," Boulon wrote.
According to Rafe Boulon, his son finished 14th at the Formula Windsurfing World Championships last year. This year, he said, Devon also won the U.S. National Championship and the European Espoir Championship.
Rafe Boulon said that his son is currently relaxing at his girlfriend's house in Switzerland before his sponsors fly him to San Francisco to test some sails. After that, he'll travel on to Hawaii for a photo shoot. His sponsors are Windwing Sails, F2 Boards, Gulftech booms, and Deboichet Fins.
The senior Boulon said that while he and his wife still help out a bit financially, their son is making a living as a professional windsurfer.
Devon Boulon wrote a piece that's posted on the Formula Windsurfing Class Web site about the thrills, chills and hunger pangs of the World Championships competition on the fourth day out. To read it, click here.
