Workshops On Solar Crop Dryers Slated for St. Thomas, St. Croix
V.I. farmers, herb growers and individuals with an interest in agricultural businesses will learn of potential benefits of solar crop dryers at workshops scheduled at UVI's St. Thomas campus on Sunday, Oct. 5, and on the St. Croix campus on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Solar crop dryers are custom-designed dryers suitable for farming operations with limited resources or that lack access to electrical power. Dr. Clement Sankat of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad will be the speaker. Sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the V.I. Energy Office and the V.I. Institute of Agriculture Development, the workshop on St. Thomas will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. A visit to a model crop dryer is planned. The St. Croix session will take place in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center.

Counseling and Placement Offers Career Development Workshop Series
UVI's Counseling and Placement Center on the St. Thomas campus is offering a series of career development workshops for students. The workshops are free and will continue through the fall. All sessions are scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 211 of the Teacher Education building.

Computer Skills Courses Offered on St. Thomas, St. John
Two sessions of the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) computer skills course will be offered to residents of St. Thomas and St. John this fall by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit. The popular course provides computer training in seven areas including basic information technology concepts, managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and using the Web and e-mail. Courses begin the week of Oct. 6.
Individuals can select from the following course schedules:
* Mondays/Wednesdays 4 – 7 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. – noon
* Tuesdays/Thursdays 6 – 9 p.m. and Saturdays 1 – 4 p.m.
The ICDL certification program is recognized in more than 100 countries as the international standard for computer literacy by employers, educational institutions and government agencies. Individuals can choose between a complete, seven-module course for $595 or a four-module ICDL "Start Program" for $395. Nurse Lecture Series Continues October 13 with Cancer-Related Topic
The fourth Martha and Bennie Benjamin Nurse Lecture Series is scheduled at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, on the St. Thomas campus, with video-conferenced access on the St. Croix campus. The guest lecturer will be Sandra Millon Underwood, Ph.D., RN, FAAN. Dr. Underwood's presentation is titled "Reducing Cancer Related Health Disparities Through Education and Outreach: If Only Those of Us Who Could . . . Would." The lecture will be given in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) and video-conferenced to the Theater (Evans Center Room 401) on St. Croix.

Reichhold Center to Mark 25th Anniversary With V.I. Film Premiere
The UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts will mark its 25th anniversary with the Caribbean premiere of the independent film "Me & Mrs. Jones" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19. The film was directed, produced and co-written by native son Edward LaBorde Jr.
Tickets for "Me & Mrs. Jones" are $8 and are available at the Reichhold Center Box Office. For ticket information call the Box Office at 693-1559.
UVI Music Department to Hold Fall Concert on October 18
The UVI Music Department will present its annual fall semester concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Christchurch Methodist Church in Market Square, Charlotte Amalie. The concert is titled "To God Be the Glory." Performers will include the UVI Concert Band, under the direction of professor Austin Venzen, and the University Concert Choir, under the direction of professor Elvira Green. Eugenia Chapman, Detra Davis, Melita Etienne, Danielle Greenaway and Eltino Pickering will perform solos.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. They are available at the UVI Bookstore, the UVI Humanities Division Office and from UVI Band and Choir members. For more information contact Venzen at 693-1192.
World Food Day Observance Set for St. Croix Campus
World Food Day will be observed from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, on UVI's St. Croix campus. Educational workshops will be featured. Topics covered will be goat, avocado and cucumber production. Also planned are food demonstrations, games for children, guided tours of the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station's research facilities, a food vendors court, a farmers market and a cook-off competition. Local music and cultural entertainment will be provided.
