Oct. 2, 2003 — Miss University of the Virgin Islands Alba Harrigan ranked among the top 10 in the 2003 Hall of Fame Black Campus Queen Competition held in Atlanta, Ga., in September. Harrigan, a UVI junior majoring in psychology, competed against 39 other contestants.
"It was new to me," Harrigan said of the experience. "These girls were confident, bold and always willing to express themselves." She added, "I represented all the way."
Although the competition was tough, with so many talented young women, Harrigan said the event was more of a gathering than a contest, according to a release.
"It was a collaboration of 40 strong, ambitious, spiritual women," Harrigan said.
They competed in four categories: oratory, talent, eveningwear and question- and-answer. They also participated in career, relationship and leadership seminars and a tea party, and attended a college football game.
When Harrigan competed in February for the UVI crown, she won titles for "Miss Congeniality," "Best Ambassadorial Presentation," "Best Talent," "Best Evening Wear" and "Miss Intellect."
Harrigan initially ran on the platform of promoting self-esteem in students. In addition to speaking to students about the importance of self-esteem, Harrigan also plans during her tenure to speak about personal development, the benefits of higher education and the importance of attending a Historically Black College or University. Her primary focus will be on high school seniors.

UVI has participated in the Hall of Fame Black Campus Queen Competition since 1987.
