Sept. 25, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
The UVI St. Thomas Campus Bookstore is Closed for Inventory
The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus will be closed from Sept. 25 through Sept. 30, while the staff conducts inventory. The bookstore will reopen on Oct. 1 with its regular hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Annual Alumni Phonathon Continues
UVI's annual Alumni Phonathon continues through Friday, Sept. 26. It will be conducted on the St. Thomas campus from the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Phonathon volunteers place calls to the University's alumni to solicit financial support for the UVI Annual Fund. Calls will be placed between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
UVI Students to Share Research Results at Fall Symposium
Thirty UVI students will share the results of their recent research projects in science and mathematics at the third annual Fall Research Symposium scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.
Students will display their work in poster presentations and will be on hand to discuss the results with interested individuals. "Some of this is cutting-edge research," said professor Camille McKayle, a project director with UVI's Emerging Caribbean Scientists Program which is organizing the symposium. McKayle encourages the public to "come out and be amazed at what our students are doing."
The research to be presented was done by students working along side UVI faculty on both St. Thomas and St. Croix and, in some cases, at off-island institutions. Areas studied include mathematics, biology, marine science, psychology and computer science. Other project directors include UVI professors Teresa Turner, Marc Boumedine and Robert Stolz.
The symposium is free and open to the general public. For more information contact the program at 693-1232. The Emerging Scientists program is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and from the National Institutes of Health.
Counseling and Placement Offers Fall Career Development Workshop Series
UVI's Counseling and Placement Center on the St. Thomas campus is offering a series of Career Development Workshops for students. The workshops are free and will continue through the fall. All sessions are scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. in room 211 of the Teacher Education building.

— Oct. 2 – Guide to Effective Cover Letters
— Oct. 7 – Career Focus: Charting Your Career

UVI Music Department Plans Fall Concert on October 18
UVI Music Department will present its annual fall semester concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Christchurch Methodist Church in Market Square of Charlotte Amalie. The concert is titled "To God Be the Glory." Performers will include the UVI Concert Band, under the direction of professor Austin Venzen, and the University Concert Choir, under the direction of professor Elvira Green. Solo performances will be by Eugenia Chapman, Detra Davis, Melita Etienne, Danielle Greenaway and Eltino Pickering.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. They are available at the
UVI Bookstore, the UVI Humanities Division Office and from UVI Band and Choir members. For more information contact Venzen at 693-1192
Vendor Applications Being Accepted for St. Thomas-St. John Ag Fair
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee has announced that vendor applications for the Nov. 22-23 Agriculture and Food Fair are available at the following locations:
— UVI Cooperative Extension Service, St. Thomas and St. John
— V.I. Agriculture Department, Estate Dorothea on St. Thomas and Coral Bay on St. John
— The Sea Chest, Sub Base
— Electronics Unlimited, Four Winds Shopping Center
— Sunrise Pharmacy, Red Hook Plaza
The deadline for submitting applications is Oct. 17.
The public is invited to register for the following contests that will be held on the last day of the fair:
— Heaviest Pumpkin
— Best Tasting Sweetbread
— Best Tasting Maubi
