Sept. 19, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued Sept. 18 has these announcements:
Volunteers Needed for Annual Alumni Phonathon
UVI's annual Alumni Phonathon is scheduled for Sept. 22 through 26. It will be conducted on the St. Thomas campus from the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Each evening of the Phonathon, volunteers will place calls to the UVI's alumni to solicit financial support for the UVI Annual Fund. Calls will be placed between 5:30 and 9 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help place calls, stuff envelopes and provide other assistance. Organizer Jacqueline Sprauve, supervisor of alumni affairs, promises volunteers will have a good time. Refreshments will be served. Sign up today by calling Sprauve at 693-1046 or Sybil Farrington at 693-1047.
Sept. 19 is Deadline for Students to Apply to Science Academies
Friday, Sept. 19, is the deadline for V.I. elementary and high school students to apply for participation in the 2003-2004 Science Awareness Saturday Academies program offered UVI.
The Academies — offered on St. Thomas and St. Croix — are enrichment programs designed to give students broader exposure to the sciences than is available in their regular classrooms studies. They are scheduled to begin on Saturday, Sept. 27, on St. Croix, and on Sunday, Sept. 28 on St. Thomas. There is no charge for students. For information on St. Thomas call 693-1232. VIMAS Coordinating Beach Cleanups on St. Croix
UVI's Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) will coordinate St. Croix beach cleanups as part of St. Croix Coastweeks activities beginning Sept. 20, International Coastal Cleanup Day, and continuing through Oct. 4. To organize a cleanup or to volunteer, call 692-4046.
Real Estate Salesperson's Course Begins on St. Thomas Sept. 20
Residents of St. Thomas and St. John can learn more about real estate through a five-week course offered by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit beginning Sept. 20. The Real Estate Salesperson's course will prepare individuals to sit for the Real Estate Salesperson's Licensing Exam or introduce individuals to a career in real estate. It will also help participants become more knowledgeable property owners, buyers and sellers. Marilyn Blackhall, an experienced realtor who works with ReMax/St. Thomas, will be the instructor.
The course fee of $450 covers 38 hours of instruction, manuals and registration. An early-bird discount of $25 is available if paid by Sept. 12. There are no prerequisites for the course. For details, contact UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit at 693-1100 or by e-mail.
Graduates of Personal Development Unit Courses to be Recognized
UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit will recognize students who have graduated from its programs on St. Croix with a ceremony from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Student Center on the St. Croix campus. Those being recognized are graduates of the International Computer Driving License program, the Legal Assistant Certification course and the Real Estate Salesperson's course. UVI Accounting Association to Meet Sept. 21 on St. Croix
The UVI Accounting Association, St. Croix campus chapter, will hold its next general meeting from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, in Evans Center room 716 on the St. Croix campus. For details call Cheryl Connor at 773-0559 or 773-1440 Ext. 235.
Open House, Tour of UVI's Sheep Research Facility Scheduled Sept. 25
UVI's Animal Science Program will conduct an open house at the Agricultural Experiment Station on St. Croix from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. Included will be a tour of the sheep research facility, viewing of the hair sheep flock, reviews of current animal research and the results of student projects. For details call 692-4942 or 692-4020.
World Food Day Activities Set October 19 on St. Croix
Activities commemorating World Food Day will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, on the UVI St. Croix campus. The focus will be on educational workshops, and food demonstrations will be featured.
Also available will be games for children, guided tours of the research facilities at the UVI Agricultural Experiment Station, a food vendors court, a farmers market and the annual cook-off competition. Local music and cultural entertainment are also planned. World Food Day activities are sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the Agricultural Experiment Station and the V.I. Agriculture Department.
Vendor applications are available at the UVI Research and Extension Center Room 134. A fee of $25 will be charged each vendor. The registration deadline is Oct. 1. For more information call 692-4094.
