May 23, 2003 — Several faculty members of the University of the Virgin Islands' social science division will present academic research papers at the 28th annual Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) Conference, to be held from May 26-31 in Belize City, Belize.
"It has become a tradition for faculty of UVI to attend the CSA Conference," said Dr. Dion Phillips, chairman of the St. Thomas campus division. "Research keeps us in touch in the fields.
"What we teach is a product of research," Phillips continued. "We tend to use other people's research, but it is imperative that we do research to contribute to the stockpile of knowledge." Phillips, who will present the paper "The Military of Belize," said that faculty members return to UVI with new ideas and knowledge that will be injected back into the classroom.
Several of the papers to be presented focus specifically on the Virgin Islands. Dr. Patricia Rhymer Todman will present "Trends in the Status of the U.S. Virgin Islands."
Other presentations are:
— "Long-term Care Needs of Elderly: The Case of the United States Virgin Islands," by Dr. Adelle Belle;
— "The 2002 Senatorial Election in the U.S. Virgin Islands," by Dr. Ededet Iniama;
— "Political and Religious Organizations in the Calabar Region of Nigeria and Their Roles in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade," by Iniama;
— "Socialization and Risk Perception Among Youths in the U.S. Virgin Islands," by Dr. Agatha Nelson;
— "Insular Nation-Statehood in the American Mediterranean During the Pre-Cold War, Cold War, and Post Cold War Eras – Are New Caribbean Nation-States in Store?" by Dr. Malik Sekou;
— "Olas Migratorlas a Las Islas Virgenes Estadounidenses," by Dr. Dale Mathews.
Dr. Frank Mills, director of UVI's Eastern Caribbean Center and vice president of the CSA will also attend the CSA conference.
The association, an affiliate of the International Studies Association, was founded in 1974. CSA members meet yearly for the exchange of ideas and research related to the Caribbean. Virgin Islands professionals frequently hold offices in the organization.
