Workshop on Physics of Dusty Plasmas Set June 18-21 on St. Thomas
The Physics Department of Auburn University, with assistance from UVI's division of science and mathematics, will conduct the Tenth Workshop on the Physics of Dusty Plasmas from June 18-21 on St. Thomas at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Hotel. Some 75 scientists and engineers from the United States, Europe, Asia and the Virgin Islands are expected to attend.
The study of dusty plasmas is a rapidly growing subfield of physics, according to workshop organizer Dr. Edward Thomas Jr. of Auburn's Plasma Sciences Laboratory. He said the field is enjoying increasing interest from the industrial, environmental and scientific communities. Over two dozen research groups around the world currently conduct theoretical, laboratory and microgravity experiments on dusty plasmas. The St. Thomas workshop will consist of over 80 scientific presentations by students, faculty, and other researchers. It will include a presentation by UVI's Dr. Nora Andreasian-Thomas.
Topics to be discussed will range from improved fabrication of photovoltaic (solar) cells to the role of charged dust in planetary ring phenomena to ongoing experiments on board the International Space Station. Members of the UVI faculty assisting with workshop organization are professors David Smith, Roy Watlington, and Michael Henry.
Thomas, an associate professor of Physics at Auburn, is a former resident of St. Thomas, a 1985 graduate of CAHS and is the son of West Indian Company president, Edward Thomas Sr. (See Source article on Edward Thomas Jr.'s St. Thomas visit and the previous dusty plasma conference in 2002, CAHS graduate says his science career is 'a rush!'.)
Edward Thomas Jr. may be reached via e-mail at etjr@physics.auburn.edu, 334-844-4126 or 334-844-6915. More information on the conference is available online.
