MAN'S BULLET-RIDDLED BODY FOUND OFF CASSI HILL

May 13, 2003 – Police have not yet released the name of a man whose bullet-riddled body was found Monday night in the Anna's Retreat area near Cassi Hill.
Police were notified around 9 p.m. of a shooting on a narrow winding road just off Cassi Hill. Responding detectives and patrol officers found the body of the 27-year-old victim, who had been shot multiple times in the back.
According to police sources, as of late Monday night, no suspects had been detained and a motive for the shooting had not been established. The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Police blocked access to the winding roadway where the victim was found. A small group of area residents gathered a few yards away as homicide investigators and forensics agents combed the area for evidence and clues to the fatal shooting. Some residents commented that in recent times the area had become increasingly prone to violent crime.
The shooting is the 11th homicide on St. Thomas this year and the 14th in the territory.
A year ago, when a record number of killings were reported, the toll had stood at 11 for St. Thomas and 15 for the territory as of May 11. Then, on May 12, three more shooting deaths, in separate incidents, took place on St. Thomas.
