NEW B.V.I. GOVERNOR MAKES FIRST U.S.V.I. VISIT

April 29, 2003 – The new governor of the British Virgin Islands, Thomas Macan, and his wife, Janet, paid a courtesy call at Government House on St. Thomas Tuesday.
Gov. Charles W. Turnbull took them on a tour of the historic structure and the two governors agreed to hold this year's annual Friendship Day festivities on May 31, according to a release.
The U.S.V.I. and the B.V.I. alternate hosting the observance, and this year it is the U.S. territory's turn.
Macan was making his first visit to the territory since being appointed governor of the British Virgin Islands by Queen Elizabeth II. In the British possession, the governor represents the crown and has responsibility for external affairs; the local government has an elected Legislative Council, from which the governor designates the chief minister.
