MILITARY NEWS – APRIL 2003

Here will be posted military news of V.I. women and men who are not stationed in the Middle East. See the article on "Virgin Islanders on Duty in the Middle East" for those on site or providing support for the current conflict. We welcome news and photos of servicemen and women from families.
Airman Alvin D. Franklin Jr. / St. Croix
April 24, 2003 (Army & Air Force News) – Air Force Airman Alvin D. Franklin Jr. has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
Franklin is the son of Alvin D. Franklin Sr. of Strawberry Sunny Isle, St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and Carmen Franklin of Miami, Fla. He is a 2002 graduate of St. Croix Central High School.
After completing the six weeks of training, airmen earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Pvt. Todakie Bassue / St. Thomas
April 22, 2003 (Army & Air Force News) – Army National Guard Pvt. Todakie W. Bassue has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in a variety of related fields.
Bassue is the brother of James Bassue of Agnes Fancy, St. Thomas. The soldier graduated Charlotte Amalie High School in 2000.
Pvt. Chadka Mayers / St. Thomas
April 22, 2003 (Army & Air Force News) – Army National Guard Pvt. Chadka A. Mayers has graduated from the water treatment specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va.
The student was trained to assist in water reconnaissance, site preparation, and the setup of a water treatment activity; operate and maintain water treatment equipment; receive, issue and store potable water, and perform water quality analysis testing and verification.
He is the son of Dave E. Mayers of St. Thomas.
Seaman Recruit Shayla Collingwood / St. Croix
April 22, 2003 (Fleet News) – Navy Seaman Recruit Shayla A. Collingwood, granddaughter of Joan E. Roberts of Frederiksted, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Collingwood completed a variety of training and took part in the capstone event of boot camp, "Battle Stations." An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
Collingwood is a 2002 graduate of Rincon High School of Tucson, Ariz.
Seaman Apprentice Kenan Henry / St. Croix
April 16, 2003 (Fleet News) – Navy Seaman Apprentice Kenan O. Henry, son of June F. and Rudyard K. Henry of Christiansted, recently graduated from Operations Specialist School at the Fleet Combat Training Center Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Va.
Henry joined the Navy in October 2002.
Seaman Recruit Sharisma Fahie / St. Croix
April 10, 2003(Fleet Home Town News)–Navy Seaman Recruit Sharisma Y. Fahie, daughter of Sandra M. Michael and Royce H. Fahie of Frederiksted, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Fahie completed a variety of training in naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety, and physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is a "Battle Stations" exercise.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyron Turnbull / St. Thomas
April 10, 2003(FHTNC)–Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Tyron L. Turnbull, son of Hyacinth A. and Vernol Turnbull of St. Thomas, was recently selected as Plane Captain of the Month with Strike Fighter Squadron 94, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif.
Turnbull was chosen as the top performer from among all the sailors assigned to the command and was cited for outstanding professional accomplishment, proficiency, leadership, initiative and military bearing.
Turnbull joined the Navy in July 2000.
Seaman Nehemiah Lord / St. Croix
April 11, 2003(Fleet News)–Navy Seaman Nehemiah A. Lord, son of Michael T. Franlois of Christiansted, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
The eight-week program Lord completed included the training events listed above under S. Fahie.
Navy Seaman Recruit John A. Dubery / St. Croix
April 10, 2003 (Fleet News)–Navy Seaman Recruit John A. Dubery, a 2002 graduate of St. Croix Central High School and son of Nelma C. Greenaway and Joseph N. Dubery of Christiansted, recently completed recruit training with honors.
During the cycle at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill, recruits are taught general military subjects. Dubery was recognized for outstanding performance in all phases of training, which included instruction in seamanship, military regulations, close-order-drill, first aid and naval history.
