April 24, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
Student Affairs Parking Lot on St. Thomas Campus to be Closed for One Week
The UVI Security Department has announced that the upper-level parking lot at the Student Affairs Building on the St. Thomas campus will be closed from Saturday, April 26, through Saturday, May 3. The lot will be used for the storage of heavy equipment during the period and will not be available for any parking. Security will block the lot beginning at midnight, Friday, April 25. For more information contact the Security office at extension 1530 or 1535.
Safe Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Workshop Rescheduled to May 30
A safe diving/hyperbaric medicine workshop, originally scheduled at UVI for Friday, April 25, has been rescheduled. The workshop is being reset for May 30. Details will be announced as they are available. For more information contact UVI Marine Advisor Mayra Suárez-Vélez at 693-1392.
Student Application Deadline for Fall 2003 Semester Is April 30
Prospective UVI students have until April 30 to apply for admission for the Fall 2003 semester. Undergraduate and graduate applications are being accepted. UVI offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in business, mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, social sciences, education, nursing and the humanities.

Summer Session Classes to Begin June 9 on St. Thomas and St. Croix
Registration for UVI's summer session classes is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, June 5 and 6. Classes will begin on June 9 and continue through July 21, with summer session officially ending on July 25. A schedule of summer classes being offered is available in the registrars' offices on both campuses. For more information call 693-1163 on St. Thomas or 692-4158 on St. Croix. Summer class schedule is also available on the Web via the "Academics" section of the UVI home page or directly for St. Croix or St. Thomas.
UVI Concert Band, High School Students to Present 'Remembering With Callwood'
The UVI Concert Band will join with local high school student performers to present hits from the '40s and '50s in a "Remembering With Callwood" concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Charlotte Amalie High School auditorium. Fourteen show-stopping acts by high school students will be included. Singers will perform hits like "When I Fall in Love," "Vaya Con Dios," "Blueberry Hill," "Rock Around the Clock," and "You'll Never Walk Alone."
UVI's Concert Band Director Austin A. Venzen says the plan is "to highlight … young musicians in the public, private and parochial schools." The UVI Concert Band has sponsored similar concerts with elementary and junior high school students in the past. A combo from the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra will also perform.
Local radio personality Richard Callwood Sr., who conducts a weekly show of the same name on WSTA, will host the concert. The concert is also designed to honor Callwood for his dedication to music and his many years as an educator. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available at UVI's Bookstore, Humanities Department, and concert band members, at Krystal and Gifts Galore (Tutu Park Mall) and at Dockside Bookshop (Havensight).
UVI Master Plan 2003 On Display at Libraries and On-line; Comments Sought
UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to inspect displays of the university's Master Plan 2003 – a document designed to help guide UVI's physical growth and development – at campus libraries on St. Croix and St. Thomas.
The capital projects office encourages comments and input concerning the master plan. The plan will ultimately be presented to the UVI Board of Trustees for review and action. Exhibits of the UVI Master Plan 2003 will remain available through May 5 at the Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus and the Evans Center Library on the St. Croix campus. Master Plan 2003 may also be viewed via the UVI Web page. Links to Master Plan 2003 are offered in the "Latest Links" and "Other UVI Web Sites" menus of the UVI home page or directly.
Questions and comments will be accepted through May 5. They should be made in writing and left at the exhibits or sent via email to UVIMP2003@uvi.edu. The public comment segment is part of the preparation process for Master Plan 2003. Direct questions to the capital projects office at 693-1504 or to Patrick O'Donnell at 693-1531.
Community Engagement Committee Sets Second Carnival Food Sale
UVI's community engagement committee continues its campaign to fund a Carnival 2003 float with a food sale from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, in the western parking lot of the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. Chicken, fish or tofu with side dishes like peas and rice, baked macaroni and cheese, potato salad, mixed vegetables and tossed salad will be available. Drinks and desserts will also be sold. The theme of this year's Carnival entry is "Driving the Economy Through Knowledge." Food tickets are available from committee members. Dishes with tofu or chicken cost $6. Dishes with fish are $7. To contribute a cooked dish or make a monetary donation, call Gail Samuel at 693-1048.
Workshop to Explore Risks of Human Exposure to Toxic Metals
A workshop on toxic metals in the environment and the risks they pose to humans will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. The number and nature of chemicals to which humans are exposed on a daily basis will be explored. The workshop is free, but space is limited. The workshop is sponsored by the Linking Virgin Islands Grass Roots to Environmental Equity Program of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service.
SBDC Offers Business Plan Writing Seminars on St. Thomas
The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct seminars on "Writing an Effective Business Plan Part I & Part II" on Monday, May 5, and Monday, May 12. Each session will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the UVI-Small Business Development Center training facility at Nisky Center, St. Thomas. The presenters will be Daryl Edwards for May 5 session and Linroy E. Freeman for May 12 session.
Admission for each seminar is $20. Individuals who pre-register and pay for both seminars by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, will be charged only $25. Admission for UVI faculty, staff and students is free, although they must pre-register. For more information and to pre-register call 776-3206 or fax 775-3756.
SBDC to Offer Microsoft PowerPoint Workshop on St. Croix
The UVI Small Business Development Center will conduct an "Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint" workshop from 4:45 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the UVI SBDC training center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level, St. Croix. UVI-CPDU to Offer 'Computer Driving License' Certification Courses
UVI's personal development unit has announced plans
to offer a seven-week International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Program on both campuses. Registration is available through May 9 on St. Thomas. Registration on St. Croix will be open from May 22 through June 13. ICDL is a globally recognized training and certification program that provides a gateway for individuals to raise their level of knowledge in fundamental computer concepts and skills.
The training program targets anyone who has a desire to use a computer competently. No prior knowledge or experience is required. Students will master basic concepts, managing files, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentations, using the Web and e-mail. The course will be offered on St. Thomas from May 13 through June 14, 2003 (Weeks 1-4) and July 22 through August 9, 2003 (Weeks 5-7). The course will be offered on St. Croix from June 17 through July 19 (Weeks 1-4) and August 12 through August 30 (Weeks 5-7).
