April 21, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Community Invited to Master Plan 2003 Presentations; Comments Sought
UVI students, faculty and staff are invited to presentations of the university's Master Plan 2003 – a document designed to help guide UVI's physical growth and development – at campus libraries on St. Croix on Tuesday, April 22, and on St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 23 (Four sessions are planned. See schedule below). The presenter will be Patrick O'Donnell of UVI's capital projects office.
The capital projects office is encouraging comments and input concerning the master plan. The plan will ultimately be presented to the UVI board of trustees for review and action.
Master Plan Presentation Schedule:
— St. Croix: Tuesday, April 22: from noon to 1 p.m.; from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
— St. Thomas: Wednesday, April 23: from noon to 1 p.m.; from 4 to 5 p.m.
Exhibits of the UVI Master Plan 2003 will remain available through May 5 at the Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus and the Evans Center Library on the St. Croix campus. Master Plan 2003 may also be viewed via the UVI webpage. Links to Master Plan 2003 are in the "Latest Links" and "Other UVI Web Sites" menus of the UVI home page or directly.
Questions and comments will be accepted through May 5. They should be made
in writing and left at the exhibits or sent via email to UVIMP2003@uvi.edu. The public comment segment is part of the preparation process for Master Plan 2003. Program to Detail Grants for St. Thomas Farmers
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will present an informational program detailing production and research grants available to St. Thomas crop and livestock farmers at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, in the choir room of the Music Education Building on the St. Thomas Campus.
The presenter will be Dr. John Mayne, assistant director of the Southern Regional Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. The free session is sponsored by the CES' Agriculture and Natural Resources Program. For more information call Dr. Louis Peterson, Jr. at 693-1071.
Computer Literacy Exams Scheduled April 22
The computer literacy Exams (CLE) will be offered on the St. Thomas campus Tuesday, April 22. Exams will be administered in rooms 101 or 103 of the CA Building. Sign-up sheets for those interested are available in the registrar's office from noon to 2 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
Future of VI Agriculture to be Topic of Forum on St. Croix
The future of agriculture in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be the topic of a forum for farmers scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 22 and 23 in the Theater of the Melvin Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix campus. The forum theme of "Prospects for Sustainable Agriculture in the Virgin Islands" will address issues of agricultural policy, training, funding, marketing and production. Registration costs $20 and covers materials and lunches.
All farmers, agricultural educators, policy makers and prospective farmers are invited to participate. For more information call 692-4061 or 692-4060. The forum is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service and Agricultural Experiment Station, the V.I. Agriculture Department and Farmers in Action. Workshop to Focus on Health Consequences of Eating Seafood
A workshop focusing on the health and safety consequences of eating seafood will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. Seafood consumers and those who own or work at restaurants that serve seafood are the target audience. Seafood experts and specialized physicians will present information on the disease ciguatera and on related allergies and histamine poisoning.

SBDC Plans QuickBooks Workshop April 24 on St. Croix
UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be conducting a workshop on the QuickBooks Pro 2001 computer application from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the UVI SBDC training center, Sunshine Mall Lower Level, St. Croix. Safe Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Workshop Set April 25
A safe diving workshop for fishermen divers, recreational divers, dive operators, health professionals and the general public at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, room 207.
The workshop will focus on hyperbaric medicine, diving related injuries, the bends and how to reduce diving accidents. It is sponsored by the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program, the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and the Hyperbaric Medicine Service of Puerto Rico.

Workshop to Explore Risks of Human Exposure to Toxic Metals
A workshop on toxic metals in the environment and the risks they pose to humans will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. The number and nature of chemicals to which humans are exposed on a daily basis will be explored. The workshop is free, but space is limited. To register contact UVI Marine Advisor Mayra

Student Application Deadline for Fall 2003 Semester is April 30
Prospective UVI students have until April 30 to apply for admission for the Fall 2003 semester. Undergraduate and graduate applications are being accepted. UVI offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in business, mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, social sciences, education, nursing and the humanities. UVI to Offer Legal Assistant Exam Review Course
UVI's community and personal development unit will conduct a Legal Assistant Certification Exam Review Course from May 12 through July 17 on St. Croix. Registration for the course is offered through Wednesday, May 7. The 10-week course is geared toward professionals in the legal field. It will include a detailed review of and prepare individuals to take the Legal Assistant Certification Exam.
Ilene Garner, director of the Unit, said that UVI is now recognized by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and now operates as an official NALA testing site. Garner said this effort is part of unit's mission to "provide avenues for individuals to enhance their skills and thus contribute to their overall success."
