UVI BULLETIN BOARD

April 17, 2003 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI Easter Recess Scheduled for April 18 through April 20
The university will be closed for Easter Recess from Friday, April 18, through Sunday, April 20. Regular classes, as well as regular hours for all University offices, resume on Monday, April 21.
Student Application Deadline for Fall 2003 Semester is April 30
Prospective UVI students have until April 30 to apply for admission for the Fall 2003 semester. Undergraduate and graduate applications are being accepted. UVI offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in business, mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, social sciences, education, nursing and the humanities. UVIsion Spring 2003 Edition Available Online
The Spring 2003 April edition of the UVI student newspaper UVIsion is now available on the Internet, via the UVI home page or directly. Included in this issue are a look at Dr. LaVerne Ragster: Journey to the UVI Presidency, the recent Little Theater presentation of Merchant of Venice, poetry and comments from some UVI seniors about the future.
Student Academic Awards Programs Set April 29 on Both Campuses
On St. Croix – Student Academic Awards program is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the Theater (Evans Center room 401).
On St. Thomas – The Student Academic Awards program is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, in the Sports and Fitness Center.

Program to Detail Grants for St. Thomas Farmers
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service will present an informational program detailing production and research grants available to crop and livestock St. Thomas farmers at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in the Choir Room of the Music Education Building on the St. Thomas Campus. The presenter will be Dr. John Mayne, assistant director of the Southern Regional Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. The program, which is free, is sponsored by the CES Agriculture and Natural Resources Program. For more information call Dr. Louis Peterson Jr. at 693-1071.
Future of V.I. Agriculture to be Topic of Forum on St. Croix
The future of agriculture in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be the topic of a forum for farmers scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 22 and 23 in the Theatre of the Melvin Evans Center on UVI's St. Croix campus.
The forum, with the theme "Prospects for Sustainable Agriculture in the Virgin Islands," will address issues of agricultural policy, training, funding, marketing and production. Registration costs $20 and covers materials and lunches. All farmers, agricultural educators, policy makers and prospective farmers are invited to participate.

Workshop to Focus on Health Consequences of Eating Seafood
A workshop focusing on the health and safety consequences of eating seafood will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at UVI's MacLean Marine Science Center on the St. Thomas campus. Seafood consumers and those who own or work at restaurants that serve seafood are the target audience. Seafood experts and specialized physicians will present information on the disease ciguatera and on related allergies and histamine poisoning.
The workshop is free, but space is limited. To register contact UVI Marine Advisor Mayra Suárez-Vélez at 693-1392 or send e-mail to msuarez@uvi.edu. The workshop is sponsored by the Linking Virgin Islands Grass Roots to Environmental Equity Program of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service.
SBDC Plans QuickBooks Workshop April 24 on St. Croix
UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be conducting a workshop on the QuickBooks Pro 2001 computer application from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the UVI SBDC training center, Sunshine Mall Lower Level, St. Croix. Safe Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Workshop Set April 25
A safe diving workshop for fishermen divers, recreational divers, dive operators, health professionals and the general public at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, room 207. The workshop will focus on hyperbaric medicine, diving related injuries, the bends and how to reduce diving accidents. It is sponsored by the University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program, the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and the Hyperbaric Medicine Service of Puerto Rico.
The workshop is free, but space is limited. To register contact UVI Marine Advisor Mayra Suárez-Vélez at 693-1392 or send e-mail her at the address above. UVI Master Plan to be Available On Campuses and Online
An exhibit of the UVI Master Plan 2003 will be available for review and comment beginning Thursday afternoon, April 17, at the Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus. A similar exhibition will be available beginning Tuesday afternoon, April 22, in the Evans Center Library on the St. Croix campus. Both exhibits will be in place for examination and comment through Monday, May 5.
Master Plan 2003 may also be viewed via the UVI webpage beginning April 17. Links to Master Plan 2003 are offered in the "Latest Links" and "Other UVI Web Sites" menus of the UVI home page or directly.
Questions and comments may be made in writing and left at the exhibits or may be made via email to UVIMP2003@uvi.edufrom April 18 until May 5. Public information plan review sessions will be held at the exhibit by the capital projects office where the process will be described and questions will be entertained at the following sessions:
— St. Thomas: Thursday April 17, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
— St. Croix: Tuesday, April 22, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Additional sessions may be held based on interest. Questions can be directed to the capital projects office 693-1504 or by contacting Patrick O'Donnell at 693-1531. Comments, input and ideas surrounding this final draft are sought as part of the process before Master Plan 2003 is presented to the UVI Board of Trustees for review, comment and action.
