April 8, 2003 – "As the first step in a total assessment of the state of the territory's schools," Sen. Ronald E. Russell, chair of the Senate Education and Youth Committee, has scheduled town meetings on St. Thomas and St. Croix this weekend.
Russell said in a release that both meetings will address school vandalism and violence, student community service, and parental involvement in the process of their children's education.
The St. Thomas meeting is set for 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu across from Seventh-Day Adventist School. The St. Croix session is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Curriculum Center in Kingshill west of Central High School.
Russell said he scheduled the meetings on a weekend to maximize the opportunity for community participation "in the process of finding solutions to the problems plaguing our schools." He said he hopes to incorporate community input into a broad-based and diverse strategy to ensure optimum resolution of these school issues.
The findings of the town meetings will be presented at an April 23 meeting of his committee, a release from Russell's office stated.
