April 2, 2003 – The Elaine Ione Sprauve Library in Cruz Bay will kick off its National Library Week observances on Sunday with the opening of an exhibition of photography by St. John resident Carol Beckowitz.
The public is invited to the opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Refreshments will be served.
Beckowitz, an emergency medical technician on St. John, said the photos she will be showing are from her "Close to Home" collection and feature nature's small details. "I try to capture vignettes of the natural world," she said.
She said she hopes the exhibition will help people appreciate the natural world that surrounds them. While she has shown most of the photographs before, Beckowitz said, there are a few new images. Most are in color, but a few are in black and white.
Beckowitz expects the library will have room for about 20 pieces. They will hang through May 2.
To complement the exhibition, the library will display books and materials relating to the natural world. They include photography books, National Geographic Society publications, and rare research and reference materials.
National Library Week is April 6-13. Throughout the week, Sprauve librarian Carol McGuinness said, the library will waive fines for any overdue books that are returned, no matter how long past the return date.
