Dec. 10, 2002 – Main Street and many of the other streets of downtown Charlotte Amalie will be filled with melodious steelpan sounds and other Christmas music on Friday evening at the 11th annual Miracle on Main Street seasonal celebration.
The event, sponsored by the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce, will take place from Emancipation Garden to Market Square, along Main Street, the waterfront and the side streets in between. Most stores will be open late for shopping, and restaurants will offer "Miracle specials."
Street performers for the evening will include Moko Jumbie Bacchanal, Moko Jumbie Jamboree, Mystical Moko Jumbies and Mortison Moko Jumbies; the Antilles Steel Hurricanes, Bertha C. Boschulte Burning Blazers, Joseph Sibilly Sun Rays, St. Thomas All-Stars, Sts. Peter and Paul Angels of Steel and V.I. Housing Authority Youth Steelband; and the P'your Passion and Sea Breeze bands. West Line Productions will present Latin rhythms at Rothschild Francis "Market" Square for dancing.
Miracle on Main Street starts well before the sun sets, however. The Committee to Revive Our Culture will host a traditional arts, crafts and food fair beginning at 11 a.m. in Emancipation Garden. The Addelita Cancryn Concert Choir will sing at noon there, to be followed by the Evelyn Marcelli Annex, Voices of Love and Bertha C. Boschulte choirs throughout the afternoon.
And then there's the holiday event on the water side of the waterfront: The Parade of Lighted Boats is to begin at 6:30 p.m., moving from Yacht Haven to Frenchtown and then back. "This year's parade should prove to be a spectacular sight and make Miracle on Main Street an even more exciting event," Joe Aubain, chamber executive director, said.
Susan Chandler, chair of this year's boat parade, said 11 boats are registered to take part so far, with more than $1,000 in cash and prizes to go to those with winning decorations. Chandler said she's looking forward to the event: "I think downtown is going to be spectacular."
