Dec. 9, 2002 The Republican Territorial Committee confirmed appointments and elected party officers on Saturday, unanimously approving Molly Mills-Fuchs as executive director. Attorney Julio A. Brady was approved as the Republican committee's legal counsel.
The committee elected George Blackhall as first vice-chair, Leon Powell as second vice-chair, and Vincen M. Clendinen Sr. as treasurer. Reuben Fenton accepted the position of secretary of the committee.
The committee discussed how the Virgin Islands can benefit from the last election's victories, which put Republicans in control of the U.S. Congress and the White House.
The meeting included notification of approval of the V.I. Young Republicans charter by the national organization, and a commitment to election reform, numbered seats and the advisability of intra-party primaries.
The fund-raising committee, co-chaired by April Newland and former Sen. Holland L. Redfield II, will hold its first major activity in late March, hosting the Republican Northeast Leadership Conference at the Divi Hotel on St. Croix. A number of top Republicans from the Bush administration and the Congress will attend.
Newland is planning a session focusing on the V.I. Economic Development Commission and tax benefits available to investors. Affordable insurance will also be discussed at the conference.
The next meeting of the Territorial Committee is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2003.
