UVI BULLETIN BOARD

Nov. 21, 2002 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today includes:
Paradise Jam Opens November 22 at UVI's Sports & Fitness Center
The 2002 Paradise Jam, the NCAA Division I holiday tournament that UVI has hosted since 2000, opens with men's tournament action on Friday, Nov. 22, with a game between St. Bonaventure and Virginia Tech at 6:15 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. The evening continues with an 8:30 p.m. game between BYU and Toledo.
The six men's squads involved represent Brigham Young University, Kansas State University, the University of Michigan, St. Bonaventure University, the University of Toledo and Virginia Tech University. Women's teams will be visiting from the University of Arkansas, Boston College, top-ranked Duke University, Hampton University, Old Dominion University, the University of Oregon and the University of South Carolina.
This year's men's games run Nov. 22, 23, 24 and 25. The women's games run Nov. 28, 29 and 30.

Paradise Jam tickets cost $5 for UVI students with ID, $10 for V.I. residents with ID and $40 for non-residents. Basketball fans are also invited to a special public party with players and coaches from a number of the participating teams beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Havensight Mall. Included will be sessions to meet players and coaches, clinics and a free-throw contest.
St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set November 23-24
The 21st annual St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Nov. 23 and 24 on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, with official opening ceremonies planned for 2 p.m. Saturday. The theme for the 2002 fair is "Support Agriculture: Eat What You Grow."

"The Dancing Mice" Continues Friday in UVI's Little Theatre
The UVI Little Theatre's fall presentation of "The Dancing Mice," a play by Pulitzer Prize winning author John Patrick, ccontinues its two weekend run Friday, Nov. 22, in the Little Theatre in the CA building on the St. Thomas campus. Performances are also scheduled on November 23 and 24. Show time is 8 p.m.
Tickets are still available, with those for Saturday's performance going particularly quickly. Tickets – $5 for students and $10 for adults – are available at the Humanities Building and UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus, and at Nisky Pharmacy and Dockside Bookstore. UVI Welcomes New Director of Sponsored Programs
UVI Provost Dr. Gwen-Marie Moolenaar has announced the arrival of Diana Demers, the University's new director of sponsored programs. Demers comes to UVI from the University of New Hampshire where she was a member of a large sponsored programs department. Her office is located on the second floor of the Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus.
United Way "Day of Caring" Volunteers Needed
Volunteers from the UVI community are being sought to participate in the fifth annual Day of Caring sponsored by United Way of St. Thomas-St. John, set from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, at St. Thomas' Roy L. Schneider Hospital. Volunteers will tackle projects such as painting various areas of the hospital, building bench seating for the emergency room and assorted landscaping. Volunteers will receive a continental breakfast and a light lunch. Each will also receive a painter's cap. Interested persons should contact UVI's United Way Coordinator Desserie Smith at 693-1426 to register or for more information. Volunteers will gather at 8 a.m. at the hospital. More than 230 individuals participated in the 2001 Day of Caring.
Fall Semester Student Music Recital Set November 24 on St. Thomas
The Music Department of the UVI Humanities Division will conduct the fall semester Student Recital and Open House at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24, in the choir room of the UVI Music Building on the St. Thomas campus. Approximately 20 music majors and applied music students are expected to perform. The public is invited. Admission is free.
"Health Care in the 21st Century" to be Topic of Nursing Leadership Lecture
UVI's Division of Nursing Education will host a Nursing Leadership Lecture at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, in the Chase Auditorium (Business Administration room 110) on the St. Thomas campus. Educator, practitioner and community activist Dr. Catherine Alicia Georges will speak on the topic as it relates to "Challenges for the Nursing Profession."
The lecture is part of an ongoing series organized by the division and sponsored by the Bennie and Martha Benjamin Foundation. For details call 693-1290.
Dr. Georges is also scheduled to make a presentation on Monday, Nov. 25, on the St. Croix campus. For details contact Prof. Joan Marsh at 692-4014.
Thanksgiving Fortsberg-Discovery Day Holidays Next Week
UVI will be closed next Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29, in observance of Thanksgiving Day and the Fortsberg-Discovery Day Holiday. Dec. 8 will be the last day of classes for the fall 2002 semester. Final examinations will be conducted during the Dec. 9-15 period. The fall semester officially ends Dec. 15.
UVI Community Invited to Join UVI-Troupe for 2003 Crucian Festival
The general public – in addition to the entire UVI community – has been invited to join in UVI's Crucian Festival troupe. Organizers of the troupe have scheduled a public introduction of the troupe's costumes for Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. in front of the library at the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. Five costume designs have been created by Wayne James.
Organizers, who stress that they would like to see a large contingent of UVI participants from St. Thomas, will also conduct a public recruitment drive from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in front of the Sunny Isle K-Mart store. The deadline for early sign-up for the UVI troupe is Friday, Nov. 27. Early-bird sign-up fees are $50 for UVI students, and $80 for staff, faculty and the general public. Participants will receive a costume and refreshments during the parade.
