BAJO EL SOL GREETS THE SEASON WITH A GROUP SHOW

Nov. 19, 2002 – Bajo el Sol Gallery on St. John will again host "First Friday" art show openings throughout the 2002-03 season. And it is again holding its very first one not on the first Friday of next month, but next week, on the day after Thanksgiving.
The gallery in Mongoose Junction will unveil its holiday season group show as part of the traditional "Evening in the Courtyard" celebrations that Friday night kicking off holiday shopping at the Cruz Bay shopping complex.
This initial exhibition will showcase new works by gallery owners Les Anderson and Aimee Trayser as well as recent paintings, etchings, photography and prints of Kimberly Boulon, Deborah St. Clair, Steve Simonsen, Kat Sowa, Constance Wallace and Pat Whitehead.
The public is invited to meet the artists, view their works and enjoy complimentary wine and cheese at the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 29.
Those seeking unique and special gifts for holiday giving may find just what they're looking for at Bajo el Sol, according to a release. The show will be up through the end of December.
Other recent works that also can be seen at the gallery include pottery by Gail Van de Bogurt, original jewelry by Kim Holland and Serena Van Rensselaer, woodturned pieces by Avelino Samuel, hand-blown glass objects from the Maho Bay Camps Art Center and exotic sculptures by Patricia Abraham. Shoppers also will find a variety of hand-crafted holiday ornaments.
Beginning in January, meet-the-artist receptions will be held on the first Friday of the month. Shows to come will feature new two- and three-dimensional art by "local St. John artists with world-class talent," the release states.
Here's the schedule of "First Friday" openings and receptions to come:
Jan. 3 — paintings by Kat Sowa and jewelry by Kim Holland
Feb. 7 — paintings by Deborah St. Clair and pottery by Gail Van de Bogurt.
March 7 — paintings by Kimberly Boulon and sculpture by Mark Hansen.
April 4 — paintings by Pat Whitehead and woodturned objects by Avelino Samuel.
Plans for shows in May, June and July will be announced later.
