7TH SOLAR-POWERED MODEL CAR CONTEST IS ON

Dec. 10, 2001 – On your mark, get set, go — to the 7th annual Junior Solar Sprint Competition sponsored by the V.I. Energy Office. The contest is open to all junior high school students. "It's a fun experience, and the students learn math and science skills," Energy Office spokesman Jamal Nielsen said.
The contest is aimed at getting young people to experience first hand how renewable energy can be put to work. The challenge is for the students to design, build and then race solar-powered model cars from starter kits supplied by the Energy Office.
Each school will receive up to three kits and may enter as many teams, each consisting of two students. Nielsen said that in previous years the contest also was open to high school students. But now the Energy Office intends to send winning entries to the national contest, he said, and its rules allow only junior high school students.
The competitors will race their cars at the St. Croix Educational Complex on March 22 in a double-elimination format. For more information, call Nielsen at 772-2616, ext. 252.
