CLOSE-TO-RETIREE REED READYING FOR NEW CAREER

Nov. 28, 2001 – Leonard Reed, an assistant director of the Environmental Enforcement Division at the Planning and Natural Resources Department on St. Thomas, is looking ahead to retirement.
To get ready, he recently completed a 30-hour course in how to photograph civil and criminal evidence. The course was given Nov. 16-18 in Atlanta by the Evidence Photographers International Council.
"I've got to wear out, not rust out," Reed, 57, said, joking about the need to keep busy after he leaves DPNR in a few years. An experienced photographer, he plans to expand his capabilities in the hope that the island's legal community will need his services.
Reed has used his photographic skills to document enforcement problems on the job. He also is a lieutenant in the Police Department auxiliary force, something that he said will serve him in good stead when photographing evidence.
He said he learned in the course how to take pictures from inside of an object, how to photograph shiny objects and how to examine documents that may have been forged. "And we learned the business end of running an evidence photography business," he said.
Reed said although the Planning and Natural Resources and Police Departments will benefit from his newly learned skills, he paid for the course himself.
