Nov. 19, 2001 — The St. Mary's College Gaels bounced back to defeat the Dayton Flyers, 73-65, Monday afternoon in the 2001 Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.
The few fans that were at the early game enjoyed a well coached and played contest. The Gaels took a 10-point lead early in the game only to see the Flyers soar back into the game and take a slim lead at the end of the first half. "We missed a lot of offensive opportunities. We let them jump on us and expend a lot of energy.""Dayton Flyers head coach Jaci Clark said.
The Gaels come out strong in the second half to reclaim the lead for good. The Flyers did manage to come back and get to within two points of the Gaels lead but could not overcome the hump.
The Gaels broke down the pressing defense of the Flyers. "I believe that if I can dribble through a defensive trap it would turn into a defensive drill for us." Gaels point guard Corrie Mizusawa said.
The local fans rallied behind Mizusawa, which she appreciated saying, "I love new fans and putting on a show for them. The fans were telling me to shoot the ball just as they do at home. The people here are treating us like queens."
Mizusawa set a Paradise Jam tournament record with 11 assists in the game. Her teammates Katie Davis and Jerkisha Dosty each scored 19 points to lead the Gaels offensively. Julie Morris contributed 15 points for the winners. Dosty's twin sister, Jermisha grabbed game high ten rebounds.
The Flyers were led offensively by Stefanie Miller who had a game high 22 points. Kristy Hineline and Marnina Sullivan each added 12 points for the Flyers.
The Gaels evened their record at 1-1 with the victory, while the Flyer lost their first game of the season.
