LEGISLATURE'S UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF

Nov. 8, 2001 – The Legislature has set a goal of $8,000 for its 2001-2002 United Way of St. Thomas/St. John campaign, an increase from last year, Kacy Hendricks, legislative human resources director, said in a press release.
She noted that all money raised by the United Way stays in the territory. The campaign, currently under way, will continue through January.
In a meeting with legislative branch employees, Debra Brown-Roumo, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands, said the number of homeless persons in the territory is continuing to grow. "Hard times can hit anyone," she said. "Unless you have someone to call on, you, too, can become homeless in just a matter of time."
Catholic Charities of the V.I. is one of the not-for-profit groups that will receive funding from United Way of St. Thomas/St. John in the coming year. The others are the local chapter of the American Red Cross, Carabana Ensemble Theater Company, Civil Air Patrol, Downstreet People's Youth in Action, Dial-A-Ride St. John, Dial-A-Ride St. Thomas, Ebenezer Gardens, Fair Haven Camp, Friends of Volunteers in Public Schools, Girl Scout Council, Legal Services of the Virgin Islands, Lutheran Reformation Summer Program, St. Thomas Reformed Church Summer Program, Shaky Acres, V.I. Council of Boys Scouts of America and Victim Advocate Program.
