May 10, 2001 – The turnout for a recent meeting of the Republican Territorial Committee held concurrently on St. Thomas and St. Croix "was the highest in many years," according to a release from the party organization.
With Gary Sprauve, state chair, presiding, the following officers were elected: Herb Schoenbohm, first vice chair; April Newland, second vice chair; Frank Davis, treasurer; and Molly Mills, secretary.
Samuel Baptiste, the party St. Croix branch president, was named party executive director. Ike Williams, Renaldo Callwood, and Jose Rivera were welcomed as new commtitee members. Leon Powell, St. Thomas branch president, reported on plans for several fundraising events. Republican National Committeeman Holland Redfield and National Committeewoman Lilliana Belardo de O'Neal were recognized. Former Sens. Violet Ann Golden and Gregory Bennerson and St. Croix businessman Noel Loftus, an unsuccessful Senate candidate in the last election, also serve on the Republican Territorial Committee.
There was discussion of support of the party leadership for Republican appointees in the new Bush administration. Sprauve reported on his visit to the White House. Several committee members stressed the importance of Republican Party unity and solidarity as the campaigns get under way for the 2002 elections of governor and the 25th Legislature. It was stated that exploratory committees are reportedly being formed by some aspiring candidates or their backers. Some members pledged to have a full slate of viable Republican candidates in both districts.
The next meeting of the committee is set for June 9. According to the release, preparations for a proposed visit by President George W. Bush and his family to the Virgin Islands will be on the agenda.
