Every year two St. John girls benefit from the community's support of the scholarship program, funded through the annual Ruby Rutnik Memorial Softball Tournament held in Cruz Bay in April. The tournament and scholarship honor Ruby, who distinguished herself as a champion "windmill" pitcher for Antilles School and as a scholar at American University in Washington, D.C., where she died in a car accident in December 1996.
The renewable annual $2,500 awards are offered to qualifying female St. John high school graduates or college undergraduates. To be considered, applicants or their families must have lived on St. John for at least five years. The students must demonstrate financial need and must have been accepted by an accredited college or university. The scholarships are available to continuing as well as first-year students, and applicants from previous years are encouraged to reapply.

The Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund Inc. is pleased to offer a renewable $2,500 college or university scholarship to a St. John girl for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Please read through the eligibility requirements below and complete the application form that you will find by clicking here.
Please return all required documentation to the above address on or before May 15, 2001.
Scholarship winners will be notified by telephone on or before June 15 and a confirmation letter will follow. The scholarship selection committee will consist of five educators or civic leaders who are residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands. These representatives will be selected by the Ruby Rutnik Scholarship Fund Inc.
Eligibility requirements:
A St. John female who is a high school graduate in good standing, whose family or self has resided on St. John for five years or more, and who is in need of financial assistance.
A female student, same as above, already attending a college or university in good standing.
Only students accepted by an accredited college or university will be considered.
Criteria for scholarship awards are, primarily, academic excellence and financial need. The latter will be the deciding factor when choosing between students of equal academic standing.
How to apply:
All applicants must submit:
– A completed, signed application form and counselor's evaluation form.
– Two (2) letters of recommendation (see Part I, Item 15).
– A record of extracurricular activities and employment, if any.
– A one-page essay on career goals.
– An official transcript of high school grades and SAT scores.
– A license, passport or school I.D. photo.
– Copies of college or university acceptance letters.
– A copy of all parent/guardian 2000 tax returns (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ).
Students currently attending colleges or universities must submit transcripts of post-secondary grades to date, as well as high school grades. An interview may be requested.
Note: A scholarship will be withdrawn if a recipient ceases full-time attendance at an accredited college or university, or fails to maintain satisfactory grades for more than one marking period.
It is the responsibility of each recipient to arrange for a transcript of her grades to be sent to the Scholarship Fund at the end of each semester.
