CASINO HIRING OF EX-OFFENDERS DEFENDED

May 5, 2001 – The Casino Control Commission issued a release Friday upholding the right of the Divi Carina Bay Casino to employ rehabilitated criminal offenders in non-sensitive areas.
Commission member Lloyd McAlpin stated that individuals convicted of crime who have satisfied their debt to society "have been employed in public areas as housekeepers, maintenance workers or groundskeepers."
The commission has a responsibility "to ensure equal employment opportunity for all as long as it doesn't jeopardize the integrity of the commission or the casino hotel industry," commission executive director Shawna Richards said in the release.
According to the release, the commission reiterated its position in response to comments made by former senator Violet Ann Golden in an interview on WSVI-TV's "News Eight" program in which she "criticized the commission for permitting [the casino] to hire rehabilitated offenders."
The release referred to Golden as a consultant to Caribbean Exchange Enterprise, which it described as "an ATM company that was recently denied a casino service entity license."
