UVI OFFERS SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAM

April 19, 2001 — The University of the Virgin Islands is offering free residential Summer Science Enrichment Academies on both campuses. The application deadline is April 30.
The summer academies are designed to excite students in grades 7 through 12 about science, mathematics, engineering, technology, health careers, and allied health. The five-week academy on St. Croix for students currently in grades 7 and 8 will run from June 25 through July 27.
The six-week academy on St. Thomas for students currently in grades 9 through 12 will run from June 25 through July 31.
The UVI Division of Science and Math conducts the program. Participants will receive hands-on experience in the use of computers, explore basic concepts of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics through selected readings, demonstrations and laboratory investigations. Career sessions conducted by practicing scientists and health professionals are also included.
The program also offers insights for students interested in psychiatry, clinical social work or clinical psychology.
Tuition and room and board in a UVI dormitory will be provided at no cost to the students. Round trip transportation will be provided for St. Thomas and St. Croix students to participate in the academy on the other campus.
Application forms may be obtained from high school counselors and science and mathematics teachers. Interested students and parents may also call UVI and speak to Judy Roland-Fahie at 693-1232 or Dr. Rosenid Hernandez-Badia at 693-1383.
