VIHA SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM JOBS AVAILABLE

April 5, 2001 — Career opportunities in everything from computing to carpentry are now being offered by the Virgin Island Housing Authority in its 12th Annual Summer Youth Employment Program.
Paul Moron, VIHA personnel director, said the program has been very popular. "Some of the graduates are working for us now in office accounting positions," Moron said.
"We take high school and college students for training that is done on the job by VIHA supervisory personnel," Moron said, "and the students really get hands on experience."
Another opportunity the program offers is summer camp counseling. "We have counselors in each of the projects' community centers. They take field trips and learn different arts and crafts, too," Moron said.
He said students should get their applications in soon, "We don't have as many spaces as we would like to have. We have pushed the budget to the limit." He said jobs are available in computing, office procedures, maintenance, and all the trades.
Applications are available at VIHA's personnel offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix, and at the George Simmons Terrace office on St. John. They will be accepted from college and high school students and high school graduates from May 1 to May 18. The programs run six weeks for high school students and eight weeks for college students.
The program is open to student residents of public housing, Section-8 program, and legal dependents of VIHA employees who are 15 years or older, and who have completed the ninth grade. The students get paid at a maximum of 35 hours per week, with the hourly rate based on age and experience.
In addition to a completed application form, applicants must bring copies of their birth certificates and most recent report card, high school or college transcript. The documents must be copies. Originals will not be accepted.
Selections will be made on a first come basis, individual qualifications and timely receipt of required documents.
