MEETING FOR EARTH DAY PLANNING ON MONDAY

Individuals and organizations who wish to participate in Earth Day events on Saturday, April 21, are invited to the second in a series of Earth Day meetings at 1 p.m. Monday co-sponsored by the V.I. National Park and the St. John Community Foundation, according to Mary Blazine, Foundation Executive Director.
The meetings will be at the Foundations' offices in Cruz Bay.
This year's observation, according to Blazine, will focus on recycling. National Park Superintendent John King has indicated an interest to initiate recycling projects in the Park, and this will be the perfect opportunity to start, Blazine said.
One project planned for this year is a recycling contest to be held in all St. John private and public schools. Students will be competing by classroom and will be awarded prizes based on which class collects the most plastics and cans, Blazine said. There will be first, second, and third place prize awards that will include a weekend at the VIERS campground, and a pizza party for the winning class. The first place prize award is a surprise.
Bob Hart of the Gateway Committee will spearhead an island cleanup that will collect litter along Centerline Road from Gift Hill to Coral Bay, and from Gift Hill to Cruz Bay. On April 21, there will be a cleanup hike from Cruz Bay Park to Lind Point. An awards ceremony, music by the Love City Pan Dragons and exhibits by local groups will also be a part of the Earth Day 2001 celebration at the Visitors Center Children's Park on Saturday.
For more information on the events, contact Mary Blazine at the Foundation at 693-9410.
