FATAL STABBING IS 1st V.I. MURDER OF 2001

St. Thomas recorded the territory's first murder of the new year when a construction worker was stabbed to death around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Estate Bellevue.
Circumstances surrounding the stabbing were sketchy, but police said a confrontation between the victim and his attacker ended in the stabbing which claimed the life of the victim. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The victim was rushed by ambulance to Roy L. Schneider Hospital where attempts to save him were unsuccessful. The man suffered stab wounds to the heart, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Annette Raimer.
The stabbing took place where an auditorium for the East India Association is being built, a site at No. 1B-1 Estate Bellevue. The contractor on the job is Apex Construction; attempts to reach Apex President Joe Hodge for comment were unsuccessful Wednesday.
Raimer said late Wednesday afternoon that the motive is unknown and that homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses to the fatal stabbing.
It was not known whether the murder weapon was recovered.
Anyone with information should contact police at 774-4050, 911 or the confidential crime line at 777-8711.
