V.I. GROOMS DISTANCE RUNNERS FOR FUTURE

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation announced that Lawrence Lockhart has been selected to compete in the World Junior Championships in Track and Field in Santiago, Chile this week.
Lockhart will compete in the 1500 meters event, one he excelled in as a freshman at Alabama State University last year. A graduate of the St. Croix Educational Complex, Lockhart and his high school coach, Devon Peters, traveled to Chile this past weekend.
Ronald Russell, president of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation, said Lockhart is one of the four top young distance runners in the Virgin Islands, including Jackie Morgan of the University of New Mexico, Bill Bohlke of Louisiana State University and Sheldon Williams of the University of the Virgin Islands.
"Each have the potential to excel and reach Olympic level," he stated. "The plan is to provide the necessary support that will allow them to develop over the next Olympiad and see them qualify for the World Championships, the Pan Am Games and the Olympics in Athens 2004."
