TUGLIFE, CAPT. VIC TO COOPERATE ON NEW SERVICE

Car barge companies Tuglife and Republic Barge Service, Inc.—which operates the Capt. Vic—are cooperating on a plan that would expand service between Red Hook, St. Thomas, and Cruz Bay on St. John beginning in early November. Along with the new service would come a price hike of about $5 roundtrip, according to Tuglife owner Stanley Hedrington.
The plan would add a daily 11 p.m. run each way between Red Hook and Cruz Bay, Hedrington said, as well as runs each way every hour on the hour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Those purchasing a roundtrip ticket on one barge could use the same ticket on the other barge upon return.
Hedrington said details are being worked out between the two companies and with the V.I. Port Authority, and he expects to have final word on the new schedule next week. He said also under consideration is an additional 8 p.m. run each way.
At present, the cost of transporting a vehicle by either barge is $20 each way or $25 roundtrip. Hedrington said he expects the cost to rise to $30 roundtrip, though he added that those purchasing special commuter tickets would still pay $25 roundtrip.
