7 V.I. SENIORS NAMED MERIT SCHOLAR SEMIFINALISTS

Seven Virgin Islands high school seniors are among some 16,000 semifinalists in the nationwide National Merit Scholarship competition for 2001. Less than one percent of U.S. and territorial high school seniors were named semifinalists.
The students are:
Jessica Buchalter, Antilles School, St. Thomas;
Carole Dobrynski, Antilles School;
Kathryn Groner, Country Day School, St. Croix;
Anwar Lockhart, Antilles School;
Andrew Luscz, Antilles School;
Jelani Newton, Country Day School;
Justin Wheatley, Antilles School.
National Merit Scholar semifinalists go on to compete for about 7,900 Merit Scholarship awards totaling more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.
To become finalists, these students must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by their school principal and score well on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT. The student and a school official also submit a detailed scholarship application including a student essay and information about his or her participation and leadership in school and community.
National Merit Scholars will be announced beginning in April 2001.
