RULES TO HEAR MATHES, 2 RENOMINEES NEXT TIME

Coastal Zone Management Commission nominee Robert Mathes, who was not invited to Thursday's Senate Rules Committee hearing on CZM nominations, will be asked to appear at the next meeting, an aide to Rules chair Violet Anne Golden said Friday.
There was some confusion Thursday about Mathes not being called to that session, where six other nominees appeared and were approved. Gov. Charles W. Turnbull recently nominated Mathes, a 24-year V.I. government employee, to fill the CZM position held by Albert Paiewonsky, whose term has expired.
Golden staff member Jim Southerland said that the standard background check on Mathes had just been completed and hadn't reached his office in time for Thursday's hearing.
Two current commission members renominated by Turnbull, Austin "Babe" Monsanto for St. Thomas and Marquise C. James for St. John, also were not at Thursday's meeting. Their applications have been completed, Southerland said, and all three nominees will be invited to the next Rules hearing, at a date to be announced.
If the three nominees plus the six approved on Thursday all win full Senate confirmation, the 15-member commission will still have two vacancies – one on St. Croix and one on St. John. Members are paid $50 per meeting plus expenses.
