Tropical Storm Debby is strengthening steadily and may become a hurricane on Tuesday, according to an 8 p.m. interim report from the National Hurricane Center Monday night.
At 8 p.m., the center of the storm was located at 16.4 degrees north latitude, 60.2 degrees west longitude, about 115 miles east-southeast of Antigua. Maximum sustained winds were reported at 70 miles per hour, with higher gusts especially to the north and east. Debby was moving to the west-northwest at 20 miles per hour, and that motion was expected to continue.
Barometric pressure was 1006 millibars.
A storm surge 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels is expected. Rainfall could total as much as 4 to 6 inches and could produce dangerous flash floods.
