A 20-cent difference at the gas pumps means motorists on St. Thomas finally have a choice when it comes to topping off their tanks.
According to the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs' latest gasoline price survey, there is a 20-cent gap in prices at gas stations on St. Thomas.
The best buys for self-serve premium are at Fast Stop in Sugar Estate and Contant and Tutu Esso at $1.90 a gallon. For self-serve regular, the best places to fill up are at Tutu Esso and the Fast Stops in Sugar Estate and Contant at $1.80 a gallon.
The best price for full-service premium can be found at Domino in Frydenhoj at $1.90 a gallon. The cheapest full-service regular can also be found at Domino in Frydenhoj at $1.80.
The highest prices for premium self-serve on St. Thomas are at Amexpo, C&M, Friendlys and Tutu Texaco at $2 a gallon. For self-serve regular, the highest prices are at Tutu Texaco, Friendlys and C&M at $1.90.
The 20-cent difference on St. Thomas is due to the fact that Texaco retailers have not reduced their prices following a decrease by wholesalers, as have Esso and Domino retailers, according to DLCA Commissioner Andrew Rutnik.
"There is obvious room for competition in the St. Thomas gasoline market," Rutnik said. "The department has been encouraging consumers to gas up at the least expensive station. At this time, they would be in a position to save substantially."
