PEACEMAKERS HAVE "CULTURAL ADVENTURE" IN P.R.

"Bueno, muy bueno!" was the word as the Peacemakers soccer team returned from the Roosevelt Roads Soccer Tournament in Puerto Rico last weekend.
The Peacemakers, members of the St. Thomas Youth Soccer Association, along with teams from St. Croix and St. John, participated in the tournament which was sponsored by the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility and the U.S. Navy.
Now that all the cleats and shin guards are put away, the travelers reported that their Puerto Rican weekend was a "cultural adventure," as well as an athletic one, said Tanya Ward Benjamin, the association's public relations officer.
The Peacemakers made a good showing, coming in second and third. The youngsters, under 14 years old, also took part in a "cultural exchange." They had a unique opportunity to stay with Puerto Rican families, where each host family took in two children. Some of them had a "first," when they were taken bowling.
The purpose of the tournament, aside from the games, was to develop friendships between the neighboring islands, Benjamin said. The tournament was topped off by a big party for all teams on Saturday night.
St. Thomas adult players accompanied the younger crowd, with some "fun" games. The Antillean Strikers Football Club beat the Navy Base team on Friday night 14-1, in what was reported as a "good spirited, very friendly" game.
The St. Thomas Women's Soccer team and others played a nine-side game against the Navy Base and local referees on Saturday night. That was reported as a "fun game, no scores."
The final scores of the tournament were as follows, out of five teams:
Under 12
First – Fraigcomar
Second – Peacemakers
Third – Rosy Roads
Fourth – San Juan Tigers
Fifth – St. Croix team
Under 14
First – Fraigcomar
Second – St. Croix team
Third – Peacemakers
Fourth – Rosy Roads
Fifth – Yabucoa.
