LINDELLE DAVIS WINS TERRITORIAL SPELLING BEE

Lindelle Davis was "vivacious" Thursday as he correctly spelled the word to win the 2000 Territorial Spelling Bee.
The 8th grader at Wesleyan Academy on St. Thomas survived 16 rounds.
Shamella Brown of Ricardo Richards Elementary School on St. Croix lasted 15 rounds, until failing to spell the word "cardiomegaly" correctly. Cardiomegaly means "enlarged heart."
Davis also outlasted 10 other students, champions in their own schools and the St. Thomas-St. John and St. Croix districts.
He will represent the territory at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May. He will be accompanied by Allan Samuel, his coach and English teacher, and Mary Harley, spelling bee district coordinator.
All 12 competitors received certificates, trophies and gifts at the awards ceremony held at Palms Court Harbor View. They were also treated to lunch and a field trip to Coral World.
As first- and second-place winners, Davis and Brown received Corel/WordPerfect computer software and dictionaries from Scripps Howard.
Congratulating all of the participants, Education Commissioner Ruby Simmonds told them each one was a winner. "The Spelling Bee is an exercise in discipline," she said.
Simmonds said that students who study to learn how to spell also learn how to listen, a skill which, "if developed early, will be useful for the rest of their lives."
She also had high praise for the parents, teachers and coaches. "Without you, the students could not have achieved the success they did here today," she said.
The competitors, in order of their placement, were:
Lindelle Davis – Wesleyan Academy
Shamella Brown – Ricardo Richards Elementary School
Jamie Hariet – St. Croix Christian Academy
Elliott Richards – Addelita Cancryn JHS
Yannick Polius – Free Will Baptist School
Tashima Lambert – Lew Muckle Elementary School
Crystal Williams – Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School
Diamond Bishop – St. Mary's School
Alani Gregory – Joseph Sibilly Elementary School
Tameika Ward – Edith Williams Elementary School
McIvin Matthew – Claude O. Markoe Elementary School
