TRI-ISLAND FORUMS SET ON PROPOSED WAPA SALE

Beginning Sunday, the Democratic Party will host public forums on St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix "to educate the people" about the governor's proposal to sell 80 percent of the Water and Power Authority to Southern Energy, party spokesman and Government House aide James O'Bryan Jr. said. Representatives of the company and Gov. Charles W. Turnbull's negotiating team will be present to summarize the proposed deal and respond to questions, he said.
The St. John meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Legislature Building conference room. The St. Thomas session is set for 7 p.m. Monday at Palms Court Harbourview Hotel. The St. Croix meeting is to be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Mid-Land Restaurant. All are open to the public.
O'Bryan said the political party is not endorsing the proposal and Democrats are free to support or oppose it. He said the decision was made to hold the forums after Gov. Turnbull, a Democrat, "requested educational programs to give the proposal a full airing." He also said representatives of the negotiating team and Southern Energy will be taking part in other community meetings that are being arranged.
