The St. Thomas Historic Trust held its monthly meeting on Sunday afternoon in the new official headquarters, Haagenson House, at the top of the ninety-nine steps. President, Felipe Ayala, reiterated the mission of the trust to identify, protect and preserve historic structures and sites located in St. Thomas. The trust has been in existence since 1965 and has recently grown in membership and effectiveness.
Ayala also announced that Brenda Sullivan was hired as manager and curator of Haagenson house in a cooperative arrangement between the Historic Trust and Michael Ball of 1829 and Haagenson House. She will also direct the day to day workings of the Historic Trust.
Ayala called for volunteers for four new committees that will give more hands on involvement to the growing number of members. Fund raising, of course, is a necessity and General Projects will always need assistance. To carry out the mission of the trust an Education Committee is needed to develop more effective ways to make everyone aware of the treasures we have and the importance of preserving them.
The Tour Committee is already in full swing and in great need of volunteers to conduct the tours. Holland American lines have tours coming through Haagenson House at the rate of a hundred persons a tour. A contract is being developed with Royal Caribbean for a more inclusive tour of The Inn at Blackbeards, Haagenson House, and an interpreted walk through a portion of Kongens Gade ending in Emancipation Park.
After discussing activities the St. John chapter is planning and a possible April trip to St. Kitts and Nevis, the members adjourned to enjoy the beauty of the house and the many valuable historic pictures and furnishings it contains.
