YOUTH DANISH STEELBAND PERFORMS ON ST. THOMAS

A young steelband group from Denmark will take center stage for a "Steelband Sound Off" from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Emancipation Garden.
The Danish steelband, called Vendsyssel Marimba Steelband (VMS), consists of young men and women ranging in age from 17 to 19 . Members were selected from four public music schools in Denmark.
The group will be "sounding off" on Saturday with three local steelbands, including the "BCB Burning Blazers" from Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, the "Majestic Steel Orchestra" from V.I. Christian Ministries and the "St. Andrews Golden Miracles Steel Orchestra" from St. Andrews Anglican Church.
Look for the Danish steelband to also appear at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 at the Havensight Shopping Mall, adjacent to Building 3 and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Coral World Marine Park's amphitheater.
In Denmark, the VMS band performs as musical ambassadors specializing in Caribbean steel pan music.
VMS is visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands to explore the island's music and culture. The group will be performing on St. Croix, as well, between October 18 and 24.
The Danish steel band and local groups will be sharing the strong rhythms of the Caribbean and exchanging their heritage, while entertaining the public, according to acting Tourism Commissioner Michael Bornn.
" Don't miss this rare opportunity to see them," said Bornn.
