GEARING UP FOR SEASON ON ST. CROIX

The 13th Championship Vueve Clicquot Women's Laser Regatta returns to the St. Thomas Yacht Club, November 19-21, 1999. The three-day sailing regatta combines sailing instruction and three classes of racing competition ranging from entry-level to advanced. The event traditionally attracts top-ranked women sailors from the USVI, Europe, the U.S. mainland and other Caribbean islands. Betsy Alison, a four-time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, former Women's Laser World champion and a top-ranked match racer, will attend the event as a guest lecturer. Alison will also provide on-water coaching and post-race video review throughout the regatta.
Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Participants registering before Saturday, November 13, will receive a $5 discount on the regular $90 registration fee. For additional race information, call (340) 774-3883 or call the St. Thomas Yacht Club at (340) 775-6320.
Plans Announced for 35th Annual V.I.-Puerto Rico Friendship Celebration
The V.I.-Puerto Rico Friendship Committee recently announced plans for the 35th Annual V.I.-Puerto Rico Friendship Celebration. The theme for this year's celebration is "A Vision Towards the 21st Century – Empowering Our Cultures in Unity." The celebration was created in honor of Puerto Ricans residing in the Territory and other Puerto Ricans who have made substantial contributions to the advancement and progress of the USVI. Activities will begin on October 2, 1999, with a food fair at "Estate Profit" and the V.I.-P.R. Queen Contest following that evening at the St. Croix Educational Complex auditorium. Events will continue October 8-11, with the opening of a V.I.-P.R. Friendship Village, several sporting events, a parade and a Governor's awards ceremony. A "Fiesta en el Batey" will be held on October 31, at Estate Whim Plantation Greathouse. To learn more, call (340) 772-1000.
New Coffee House Opens on St. Thomas
King's Caribbean Coffee Café recently opened on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront. The company owns a 12,000 square-foot roasting facility and a coffee bar on St. Croix. In addition to selling regular coffee and frozen coffee, the café sells a variety of baked goods. King's is setting up computers for customers to check their e-mail and to browse the Internet. Plans are also underway to open two new stores on St. Thomas and another in the Frederiksted Mall on St. Croix. King's is also in the process of diversifying to sell products like coffee grinders, T-shirts, bulk coffee, posters and French presses. King's Caribbean Coffee Café was named after its founder and owner Charles King, a resident of St. Croix for the past six years. For more information, call (340) 776-9523.
St. Croix's Candelight Concert Series to Expand for Millennium Season
The St. Croix Landmarks Society announces an expanded concert series for the 1999-2000 season in celebration of the approaching millennium. The annual Candlelight Concert Series will begin in October and consist of six different concerts, featuring renowned classical musicians who play a variety of instruments. All concerts will be performed under candlelit antique chandeliers in St. Croix's 18th-century Estate Whim Plantation Greathouse on Friday and Saturday evenings. Free "Listen and Learn" concerts and workshops presented by 12 participating world-class performers are a new addition to the series offered for St. Croix teachers and students on Friday mornings at 10 a.m. Advance reservations are required for concerts. Corporate sponsors of the series include: the Buccaneer resort, the Sunterra Carambola Resort, Antilles Automotive and American Airlines.
