There were many surprises and tense moments last Saturday during the 17th Annual Virgin Islands Advertising Awards sponsored by the Ad Club of the Virgin Islands. Industry professionals and guests gathered at the July 24th awards ceremony at St. Peter Great House. The 'ADVIs' honor the talents of artists, producers, writers and others responsible for creating some of the most imaginative advertising seen in the Virgin Islands over the past 12 months.
The event was sponsored by The Yellow Book, "A friend at your fingertips," published by Axesia Virgin Islands. MCs for the evening were Isle 95 personalities "Flash" and Bob Miller.
All three islands were among the top winners but Austin Advertising was
the runaway winner taking 21 awards, tops for the night. Austin Advertising captured the Best of Show for a Turnbull Election newspaper ad.
Austin also walked off with the Donald Plantz Award for Excellence in Print for the Turnbull Election print campaign and Special Recognition for the Designers Furniture print campaign.
Following closely were Mock LeBlanc Brown and j. newhart video. Mock
LeBlanc Brown was honored with five gold medals and five silver medals,
including awards for their high profile advertising and promotional campaign for the grand opening of the new Banco Popular building. j. newhart video walked off with three gold and seven silver awards for their efforts on behalf of Caribbean Health "Free Day", Vitelco Learning Center, Country Day School, Anti Violence Advertising Arts and the "Don't Be Fuelish" campaign for the Energy Office.
An impressive showing was made by Louis Ible, Jr. who entered the
competition for the first time and was honored with a total of six awards
recognizing his talents for magazine advertising.
The St. Croix chapter made a strong showing with photographer Carol Lee
taking the gold for her efforts on behalf of Caribbean Travel & Life "Jamaica"
spotlight. Peter Fietze took home a gold for his ever-popular 11th Annual Triathlon Poster. His posters have become collectors items.
Broadcasting made a strong showing with Knight Quality Stations receiving the
Donald Plantz Award for excellence in radio in addition to three gold
medals and one silver. WJCK/WMNG/WVPI/WVIQ, the Mongoose Radio Group, won three silver medals.
