STILL THE SAME?

Dear Source:
I read with interest the account of the Williamsburg,Va., tourist who was mugged in downtown Charlotte Amalie and who failed to get an immediate response from two different police cruisers parked in the area.
I had an experience in late 1997 that mirrors, in some respects, the unfortunate visitor's.
In my case, I was driving from the V.I. Daily News offices to Wendy's when somebody, apparently shooting a pellet gun, shot out the plastic on my dashboard as I was stuck in traffic.
Several people sitting by the street – it's across from the Kmart – said people had been shooting at people all day.
I traveled down the street to Wendy's, where I found a traffic cruiser giving somebody a ticket. I reported the incident.
The officer said she was going off duty soon and it was not her job to follow up incidents such as the one I reported.
Good to know that some things in the Virgin Islands don't change.
