Concordia Wins Award and USVI Represented at CHIC '99
Concordia Eco-tents on St. John won an achievement award in the small hotel category of the 1999 American Express/Caribbean Hotel Association Green Hotel of the Year competition. Stanley Selengut, founder of Maho Bay Camps, Inc., accepted the honor at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 15, in Nassau, Bahamas at the annual Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC). Tourism officials were also in attendance at the ceremony, as well as at the conference held throughout the week, June 13-16. Hotel Associations Begin New Summer Promotion
The St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John hotel & tourism associations have begun their first-ever destination-wide summer promotion. The new "Picture Yourself in Paradise" promotion features value-added incentives for visitors staying a minimum of five nights at participating hotels. Visitors on St. Croix will enjoy a free two-day rental car and a free discount coupon book, featuring up to $300 in savings at local retail stores, restaurants, dive shops, watersports activities and more. Vacationers staying at participating St. John and St. Thomas hotels and resorts will receive a complimentary pass book for visiting popular tourist attractions, as well as a free shopping shuttle certificate to encourage visitors to take advantage of the USVI's duty-free shopping. All visitors participating in the promotion, which is effective now through December 15, 1999, will receive a free Fuji single-use camera upon hotel check in to capture their unforgettable vacation experiences on film. Visitors can submit their best photos from each island in a photo contest to win a free return vacation to America's paradise. A winner will be selected for each island. Delta Vacations will provide two roundtrip airline tickets for each winner. Travel & Leisure Recognizes USVI Resorts for Quality Service in Readers' Poll
Travel & Leisure magazine listed two USVI resorts in its 1999 "World's Best Service" readers' poll in the June issue of this consumer travel publication. Caneel Bay was listed third and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas was listed fourth among the top five resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas for service. This recognition follows other recent accolades in the magazine's March issue, which also listed Caneel Bay resort and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas among the top 10 hotels in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas.
St. John Hosts Annual Fourth of July Celebration
Festivities will continue on St. John for the island's annual Fourth of July Celebration, June 19 through July 5. This year's theme is "Let's Party Like It's the End of Time for Festival 1999." The carnival-like event will include pageants, sporting events, music concerts, a food fair, the opening of the Carnival village, Jouvert, a parade, fireworks and more. New Book Released about St. Thomas and St. John
A new book entitled The Best of St. Thomas and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands has been released. Published by Two Thousand Three Associates, the book includes features on the territory's hotels, restaurants, bars, attractions and retail shops, as well as insider tips recommended by local residents. Written by travel journalist Pamela Acheson, a part-time Virgin Islands resident, this book also includes information about Water Island and Hassel Island. New St. Croix Restaurant Offers Ambiance and Variety of Cuisines
Savant, a new restaurant on St. Croix, offers a sophisticated atmosphere and a variety of cuisines for diners to enjoy. Located in Christiansted near Fort Christiansvaern, this air-conditioned bistro features a combination of Caribbean, Mexican and Thai cuisine. The artistic décor including black-and-white photographs creates a unique ambiance. Outdoor seating is also available. Westin Resort, St. John Offers a "Hotel Room for a Year" Contest for Travel Agents
The Westin Resort, St. John is giving travel agents the chance to win a room in paradise for a year through its "Hotel Room for a Year" contest. Travel agents who send their clients to the Westin Resort, St. John now through December 22 can enter the contest by simply filling out an entry form and sending it to the resort with each booking they make. The winner will receive complete use of a room at this luxury resort for 365 days, a value of more than $100,000. The room may be used at the winner's discretion. A few options include selling it to their clients, using it for personal vacations or sharing it with friends and relatives. In addition to being eligible to participate in this contest, travel agents who book their clients at the resort will receive a 10 percent commission, a $5 booking bonus and a complimentary night for every booking for personal use.
