IRB, POSTAL OFFICIALS OFFER HELP ON TAX DAY

Today is D-day for U.S. taxpayers, including Virgin Islanders who must file their tax returns with the territory's Internal Revenue Bureau. But IRB and postal officials are prepared to help.
The bureau will remain open until 9 p.m. today, with personnel available to answer last-minute questions and to steer taxpayers to the correct windows.
The Sugar Estate post office will leave its gates open until midnight to allow taxpayers to have their returns postmarked by April 15, as the law requires.
IRB officials have been offering V.I. taxpayers assistance and tips for weeks. Claudette Farrington, the IRB's director, issued a list of last-minute reminders this week, including these:
— Don't forget to sign your returns.
— Include a current mailing address, not your physical address, on the tax form.
— Double-check Social Security numbers for the taxpayer, spouse and all dependents to be sure they're correct.
— Make tax payment checks payable to the Internal Revenue Bureau.
Have questions? Call the IRB's chief counsel at 774-5865, ext. 2249, or 714-9312.
