MICHELINE MEYERS WORKING FOR BOOK PUBLISHER

Micheline Meyers is in the Washington, D.C., area, working for the production department of an academic book publisher, the Rowman &
Littlefield Publishing Group.
This is the umbrella company for several individual imprints, including Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Inc., which does titles in philosophy and political science, among other social sciences and humanities; Scarecrow Press, which publishes reference books for libraries; and Madison Books, which publishes trade books with academic subjects (books that are sold not just to the academic market but also to bookstores for the general market).
"I work in the production department as an editorial assistant," Micheline wrote recently. "My department guides manuscripts through the production process by coordinating with authors, copyeditors, proofreaders and typesetters."
What does that entail?
"After we receive the manuscript from
acquistions, we send it to a freelance copyeditor (or in the case of a camera-ready manuscript, we send it to a proofreader) and afterward we coordinate the typesetting. We review the proofs at each stage to make sure that all errors have been corrected and generally that everything is as it should be.
So, personally, I do a lot of comparison proofreading of proofs and cover mechanicals and preparing manuscripts for the typesetter, in addition to other editorial assistant tasks."
Micheline, the daughter of Judge Ishmael and Gwendolyn Meyers and a Wellesley College graduate, started in the department in April 1998 as an administrative assistant and was promoted to editorial assistant in September.
The company's main offices are in Lanham, Md., but it also has offices in Boulder, Colo., and New York.
