Governor's State of the Territory Address Scheduled for Monday

Gov. John deJongh Jr. will deliver his annual State of the Territory Address before a formal session of the 30th Legislature on Monday.

The session will be convened by Senate President Shawn-Michael Malone at 6:45 p.m. and deJongh is expected to begin his address shortly after 7.

The specific content of the speech will not be known until it happens. But the annual speech always has some discussion both of the current state of the territory, its economy and government finances. And the governor usually lays out some items on his agenda for the year and communicates his requests for action by the V.I. Legislature.

The impact of Hovensa’s closing on government revenues and the economy will likely be on the menu. Other likely topics include major problems facing the territory, such as the cost of energy, the status of the V.I. Water and Power Authority and the looming bankruptcy of the V.I. Government Employee Retirement System.

The speech will be broadcast live on the Legislature’s TV channel, Innovative Cable channel 17 on St. Thomas-St. John and channel 5 on St. Croix. Public television station WTJX Channel 12 will also broadcast the speech live, as will many radio stations.
