Three events are slated for the opening of the school year – V.I. Fathers Back to School Barbecue and Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 27; the Back to School Days of Prayer on Saturday , Sept. 3, and Sunday, Sept. 4; and the V.I. Fathers March on Sept. 6, the first day of school for public schools in the territory. Organizers are encouraging fathers to take their children back to school starting on the first day.

Beach Advisory for September 19-23

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) announces that the Beach Water Quality Monitoring Program, which evaluates weekly water quality at popular swimming beaches throughout the territory by sampling for enterococci bacteria and turbidity, which is a measure of water clarity, advises the public of the following:

Alton A. Adams Sr. to Be Part of Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History

The U.S. Virgin Islands will be well represented when President Barack Obama officially opens the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Sept. 24. Virgin Islander Alton A. Adams will be represented.

Potentially Invasive Sea Grass Found in Christiansted Harbor
Halophila stipulacea, a potentially invasive sea grass, was found in the waters around St. Thomas and St. John in 2014 but, until this week, its presence has not been confirmed on St. Croix.

Park Plans Overnight Mooring Fees, Bay Hosts

Come spring, boaters using V.I. National Park waters off St. John will find two major changes. First, those who use a mooring overnight will be charged $15 to do so. Second, many bays will have volunteer live-aboard hosts on hand to greet those arriving and serve as the "eyes and ears" of the park staff.
