Come spring, boaters using V.I. National Park waters off St. John will find two major changes. First, those who use a mooring overnight will be charged $15 to do so. Second, many bays will have volunteer live-aboard hosts on hand to greet those arriving and serve as the "eyes and ears" of the park staff.

There probably will be no local boaters' rate when the V.I. National Park's mooring and anchoring fee program goes into effect, acting park planner Jim Owens said after a meeting Monday, Oct. 15, at the Legislature in Cruz Bay.

Caribbean-perfect sailing conditions sandwiched between Hurricane Iris and Tropical Storm Jerry made for excellent racing -- with a stunning upset at the very end -- at the weekend Columbus Day Regatta hosted by the St. Thomas Yacht Club.

Regional U.S. Coast Guard officials are encouraging St. Thomas and St. John commercial boaters to attend a meeting on the morning of Sept. 28 to go over new marine safety regulations coming into effect this season and to review those already in place.
